Cyril Pedrosa is coming to the Tokyo BD Festival 2026!

We are delighted to welcome acclaimed comic book author Cyril Pedrosa to the second edition of the Tokyo BD Festival, taking place on 31 October and 1 November 2026!

This year, Cyril Pedrosa, the artist behind the festival’s official illustration, will be joining us in Tokyo. Renowned for the depth of his insight into the human condition and the delicacy of his storytelling, Pedrosa began his career in animation, working on several Disney productions before dedicating himself fully to comics. Over the years, his work has evolved around profoundly human themes, exploring with great sensitivity the joys, uncertainties, and complexities of life. Every line, every silent stretch of white space, and every choice of colour contributes to the narrative. Through richly emotional graphic novels, Cyril Pedrosa crafts stories that resonate deeply with readers and leave a lasting impression.

Cyril Pedrosa has recently completed Nanbanjin (南蛮人), a new work created in collaboration with Taiyō Matsumoto, scheduled for publication in France this September and in Japan the following month.

The result of a long and fruitful dialogue between the two authors, the book was developed over several years through a constant exchange of ideas, with their respective artistic sensibilities responding to and enriching one another. Even before its release, Nanbanjin has already generated considerable excitement in Japan and internationally.

The opportunity to meet Cyril Pedrosa in Tokyo this autumn, just as this remarkable new work is entering the world, is both rare and precious. It offers a unique chance to experience firsthand the creative energy of one of today’s most important comics authors and to gain deeper insight into the imagination and artistry behind his work.

Born in 1972, Cyril Pedrosa studied animation at the Gobelins school before beginning his career at Disney France, working as an in-betweener and assistant animator on films such as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Hercules. This background has profoundly influenced his approach to movement, rhythm, and staging, evident in the fluidity, expressiveness, and cinematic quality of his graphic storytelling.

Transitioning to comics, he gained major recognition with Trois Ombres (Delcourt, 2008), which won the "Prix Essentiel" at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. His 2011 work, Portugal, further cemented his reputation, winning numerous awards including the Prix Le Point de la BD and the Angoulême Public Prize. In 2013, he co-founded the digital comics magazine Professeur Cyclope.

In 2016, Pedrosa co-founded the publishing house La Vie moderne with Roxanne Moreil. Together, they created the critically acclaimed medieval political fresco L’Âge d’or (published in two volumes, 2018 and 2020). Throughout his career, he has continued to explore the intersection of narrative, painting, and experimentation. Notable recent works include Carnets de manifs (2021) with Loïc Sécheresse, the contemporary art-infused Journal d’une bataille (2024), and Elsie A. (2025) with Roxanne Moreil and Karine Bernadou.

Pedrosa maintains strong ties to animation, notably serving as the art director and lead character designer for Sébastien Laudenbach’s animated feature Carmen, l’oiseau rebelle. For 2026, he has announced Nanbanjin, a unique tête-bêche album created in collaboration with the manga artist Taiyô Matsumoto, exploring the first encounters between Portugal and Japan in the 16th century.
