David Prudhomme is coming to the Tokyo BD Festival 2026!

For the 2nd Tokyo BD Festival, taking place on October 31 and November 1, 2026, we are delighted to welcome acclaimed comics author David Prudhomme, with the support of Futuropolis and as a guest of Thousands of Books.

In 2025, David Prudhomme published a new French edition of Rébétiko, along with its sequel, Rébétissa. Set in Greece in 1936, these stories follow the young singer Beba and her companions as they struggle against censorship. Continuing the spirit of the first volume, Rébétissa powerfully conveys the soul of rebetiko music and its rebellious spirit.

In Japan, Rébétiko: The Song of the Weeds was published in 2020 as part of the Thousands Comics collection. Its sequel, Rébétissa, is currently the subject of a crowdfunding campaign, and we sincerely hope to see it succeed!

作家プロフィール

“I was born in Tours on October 4, 1969.

In the very same clinic as Pascal Rabaté and Dominique Bertail.

I drew my first comics at the age of seven. Between the ages of fourteen and seventeen, I drew constantly and, thanks to that work, I had the chance to spend time with Mœbius, Juillard, Jodorowsky, Jean-Michel Charlier, Luguy, Arno, Pellerin, Liberatore, Jean-Claude Forest, Morris, and Geof Darrow, all of whom shared their advice about the craft with me. Their guidance was technical, ethical, and philosophical. I was even entrusted with a script by Jean-Michel Charlier, the writer of Blueberry. I was seventeen years old.

Two years later, I entered the Angoulême School of Fine Arts and began work on what would become my first published album: a series about musketeers, written by Patrick Cothias.

At the same time, I experimented with other worlds, other drawing styles, and other ways of telling stories.

I approach each book by adapting both the artwork and the narrative to subjects as varied as the Louvre Museum, prehistoric caves, an unusually strange village, a medieval animal farce, a road trip, our sexualities, the war in Serbia, a novel inspired by Brassens, a day at the beach, the figure of a neighbour, the hamlet of my childhood, rebetiko music, and sumo…

These subjects impose themselves on me because of the questions they raise. I enjoy exploring them in order to offer new perspectives. I try to challenge assumptions, both my own and those of others. To entertain by questioning.

In my comics, we do not save the world from imaginary dangers, nor do we embark on grand adventures. We start from reality and try to transcend it. We observe and examine our humanity in all its details. We embrace the diversity of our many facets, while trying to smile at them…”*
