For the second edition of the Tokyo BD Festival, organized with the support of the Dutch Foundation for Literature (Nederlands Letterenfonds) and Éditions Dargaud, we are delighted to welcome graphic novelist Aimée de Jongh!

Dutch comics author Aimée de Jongh gained recognition in Japan with the publication of the Japanese edition of The Return of the Honey Buzzard (ハチクマが還るところ) in 2025 by Thousand of Books. Thanks to its finely crafted artwork and the emotional depth of its storytelling, the book attracted quiet but significant attention among Japanese readers.

Combining poetic sensitivity with a keen awareness of social issues, Aimée de Jongh’s work offers a uniquely rich artistic universe. The Tokyo BD Festival 2026 will provide a rare opportunity to discover her work and meet her in person.

Aimée de Jongh
（エメー・デ・ヨング）

Aimée de Jongh (born in 1988) published her first comic series, Aimée TV, at the age of 18. Her work quickly attracted the attention of several publishers and media outlets, with whom she continues to collaborate today. She studied animation filmmaking at the Academies of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and Ghent. Since then, she has created around ten comic series and contributed to five animated films.

Her daily comic strip series Snippers (Roomies in English, Coloc’ in French) is published in both a Dutch and a Swiss newspaper. In Belgium, she is also well known for her comics for young readers, including Kito & Boris and Slimme Pim.

In 2014, Aimée embarked on her first graphic novel as both writer and artist, The Return of the Honey Buzzard (De terugkeer van de wespendief). The book marked her international breakthrough. It was widely acclaimed and received the prestigious Saint-Michel Award for Best Comic Album of 2014–2015. The graphic novel was subsequently published in French by Dargaud and adapted for the screen in 2016.

In 2018, she collaborated with renowned writer Zidrou on her second graphic novel, Blossoms in Autumn (L’obsolescence programmée de nos sentiments), published by Dargaud.

In 2020, she released another solo graphic novel with Dargaud, Days of Sand (Jours de sable), which received widespread critical acclaim and won several awards, including the French Booksellers’ Prize for Comics.

In 2024, Aimée de Jongh published the first graphic novel adaptation of William Golding’s classic masterpiece Lord of the Flies. Released to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the original novel, the book received an international release and was published in around fifteen countries worldwide.
