Romain Renard is coming to the Tokyo BD Festival 2026!
こぎつねOn October 31 and November 1, Thanks to the support of Dargaud-Lombard and Wallonie-Bruxelles International (WBI), the agency responsible for the international relations of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, 2026, the 2nd Tokyo BD Festival will welcome comics creator Romain Renard!
Far more than a comic book artist, Romain Renard is a true multidisciplinary creator: musician, stage designer, and graphic artist. A remarkable “slashie” whose work transcends genres, he creates deeply immersive stories with a distinctly cinematic feel.
His acclaimed Melvile trilogy, published by Le Lombard, has been praised for its emotional depth and profoundly personal storytelling. With Revoir Comanche, he offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the western genre, showcasing his extraordinary talent by handling the script, artwork, and coloring entirely on his own.
His passion for cinema, along with his affection for vintage technologies such as the Betamax format, brings a unique richness and singularity to his artistic universe.

WRITER AND ARTIST
Born in 1975, Romain Renard is a comic book creator, stage designer, graphic artist, and musician: what is often called today a “slashie”, reflecting his versatility and wide range of talents. He has also contributed to video game development and collaborated on live productions, notably with Franco Dragone (Cirque du Soleil).
Raised on Betamax tapes, Romain Renard is a true child of cinema. The visual power of movie posters sparked his vocation at an early age and also nurtured his passion for music.
In 2005, he won the Best Album Award at the Cognac Crime Fiction Festival for American Seasons (Casterman, written by Yves Vasseur). Since then, the Belgian artist has established a distinctive and highly recognizable style. The End, Jim Morrison (2007), his adaptation of Daniel Woodrell’s novel Winter’s Bone (Un hiver de glace, 2011), and his illustrations for the Montréal/Québec City Guide published by Lonely Planet/Casterman further demonstrated his mastery across different media.
It was at Le Lombard that he created the Melvile trilogy, a powerful and deeply personal work that reflects a remarkable level of artistic maturity.
