Teresa Valero in Tokyo !

From Saturday 1 November to Sunday 2 November 2025, Spanish comics will take centre stage at the Tokyo Comic Festival with the participation of the Cervantes Institute and cartoonist Teresa Valero! In Gentlemind, Teresa Valero depicts the emancipation of women in the American media world of the 1940s alongside Juan Díaz Canales, while Contrapaso is a profound story that explores freedom of the press and the dark side of history in Franco's Spain. Her talent for expression as a writer, illustrator and colourist, as well as her deep knowledge of history, are highly appreciated.

TERESA VALERO

作家プロフィール

Although she was drawn to drawing and animated films from an early age, she began studying business administration before giving in to her first love. She first joined the Lapiz Azul animation studio, where she worked as a layout and storyboard artist on projects such as Tintin and Ruppert. She then joined the Milimetros studio as pre-production coordinator, contributing her skills to titles such as The Pink Panther and Asterix in America. In 1996, Teresa Valero teamed up with Juan Diaz Canales – her future husband and the writer of Blacksad – to found the Tridente Animation studio, while also teaching storyboarding and screenwriting at several universities in Madrid. Tridente worked on the animated worlds of Corto Maltese, Asterix and the Vikings and Cédric, among others. Comics are never far from Teresa's daily life...

Teresa Valero made her comic book debut writing the children's series Sorcelleries with Juanjo Guarnido, illustrator of Blacksad (2008-2012, Dargaud). She followed this with Curiosity Shop, illustrated by Montse Martin (2011-2013, Glénat). The series won the award for best script at the Festival International ExpoCómic in Madrid. Teresa then turned her hand to drawing the album We are family (2013, Delcourt) based on a script by Marie Pavlenko. We are family won the ‘Première Bulle’ award at the Angers BD Festival. Teresa Valero then teamed up with Juan Diaz Canales to co-write the diptych Gentlemind. In it, they take an unexpected look at 1940s New York through the eyes of Navit, a strong and determined woman. The album, published by Dargaud, features sumptuous illustrations by Antonio Lapone.

In 2021, Teresa Valero joined Éditions Dupuis with Contrapaso, a series that is remarkable in every way. Firstly, because it is her first work as a complete author. Secondly, because she does a tremendous job as a novelist, historian and feminist activist, drawing the reader into an investigation in Franco's Spain to discover the fate of women in the aftermath of the civil war... With its elegant style, harsh tone, surprising twists and turns, and colourful characters, Teresa Valero's Contrapaso is sure to make an impression!
