David Prudhomme is back in Tokyo !
From Saturday 1 November to Sunday 2 November 2025, the Tokyo Comic Festival will welcome cartoonist David Prudhomme! In 2025, David Prudhomme treated us to a new edition of ‘Rébétiko’ and its sequel ‘Rébétissa’. The story takes place in Greece in 1936 and tells the story of Bèba, a young singer who rebels against censorship, and her companions. Like ‘Rébétiko,’ the first volume, ‘Rébétissa’ captures the soul of rebétiko music and its rebellious spirit. In Japan, Rebetiko was translated and published in 2020 (by Thousands of Comics) and received critical and public acclaim, described as a masterpiece that poetically depicts this musical culture, also known as ‘Greek blues’, as well as the daily lives of people in search of freedom.

David Prudhomme
(ダヴィッド・プリュドム)

"I was born in Tours on 4 October 1969.
In the same clinic as Pascal Rabaté and Dominique Bertail.
At the age of 7, I drew my first comic strips. Between the ages of 14 and 17, I drew a lot and, thanks to my work, I had the chance to spend some time with MŒBIUS, JUILLARD, JODOROWSKY, JM CHARLIER, LUGUY, ARNO, PELLERIN, LIBERATORE, JC FOREST, MORRIS and GEOF DARROW, who gave me advice on the profession. Technical, ethical and philosophical advice. I was given a script by Jm Charlier, the writer of Blueberry. I was 17 years old.
Two years later, I enrolled at the Angoulême School of Fine Arts and began what would be my first published album. A series about the musketeers based on a script by Patrick COTHIAS.
At the same time, I experimented with other worlds, other styles of drawing and storytelling.
I approach each book by adapting the drawing and storytelling to subjects as diverse as the Louvre Museum, prehistoric caves, a bizarre village, a medieval animal farce, a road trip, our sexuality, war in Serbia, a novel by Brassens, a day at the beach, the figure of a neighbour, the hamlet of my childhood, rebétiko and sumo wrestling...
These subjects impose themselves through the number of questions they raise. I like to work on them to offer a different perspective, trying to challenge preconceptions, both my own and those of others. Distracting by questioning.
In my comics, we don't save the world from imaginary dangers, we don't embark on great adventures, we start from reality and try to transcend it, we observe and detail our humanity. We embrace the diversity of our many facets and try to smile about it..."
