RINTARÔ at the Tokyo BD Festival!

On Saturday 1 November 2025 and Sunday 2 November 2025, animation master and director Rintarô will be KANA Publishing's guest at the Tokyo BD Festival and will participate in a round table discussion.

Director of numerous masterpieces such as ‘Galaxy Express 999’ and ‘Metropolis,’ Rintarô is highly regarded both in Japan and abroad. This is a unique opportunity to discover the behind-the-scenes of his creative process and his philosophy of creating timeless works. We invite you to participate!

りんたろう(Rintaro)

Rintarô (born 22 January 1941) is a Japanese animation director and legendary figure who has worked on numerous masterpieces from the early days of animation to the present day. Originally from Tokyo, he joined Toei Animation in 1958 and participated in the first animated feature film, ‘The Legend of the White Snake,’ before joining Mushi Production, headed by Osamu Tezuka. He established himself as a director with ‘Astro Boy’ and ‘The King of the Jungle.’

He was then acclaimed for his films Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Genma Taisen and Metropolis. Galaxy Express 999, in particular, grandly depicts the universe of Leiji Matsumoto and is considered a masterpiece of animated cinema. As Madhouse's iconic director, he has also embarked on international projects such as the Franco-Japanese film Yona Yona Penguin. He is also involved in training young talent as a guest lecturer in the oil painting department at Kanazawa College of Art.
